Federal Firearms License Types
Nine active FFL types, each authorizing different firearms-related activities. Choose based on your business model.
The most common FFL. Buy and sell firearms as a business, conduct transfers.
Same as Type 01 plus accepting firearms as collateral for loans.
Curio & Relic license for collectors. Direct shipping of C&R firearms — not for business.
Manufacture ammunition for sale. Does not include firearms manufacturing.
Manufacture firearms and ammo for sale. Can also deal. Most versatile license.
Import firearms for sale or distribution. Also allows dealing.
Deal in destructive devices only. Rare, specialized license.
Manufacture destructive devices. Also allows dealing in DD.
Import destructive devices. Also allows dealing in DD.
Special Occupational Tax (SOT) Classes
SOT is an annual tax that allows FFLs to deal in NFA items. Required in addition to your FFL.
Import NFA firearms. Requires Type 08 or 11 FFL.
Manufacture NFA firearms including post-86 MGs. Requires Type 07 or 10 FFL.
Deal in NFA firearms (suppressors, SBRs, etc). Requires Type 01, 02, 09 FFL.
