NFA eForms Guide for Dealers

ATF eForms is how modern NFA dealers file. This guide covers what the eForms portal does, which forms matter to a dealer, and the workflow that keeps Form 3s and Form 4s moving — without paper delays.

What eForms covers

The ATF eForms portal (eforms.atf.gov) accepts electronic submission of most NFA paperwork. Electronic filings are processed dramatically faster than paper, give you a submission record instantly, and let you track status without calling the NFA Branch.

The forms a dealer actually uses

Form What it does When a dealer touches it
Form 3 Tax-exempt transfer between SOTs Every suppressor you receive from a distributor or manufacturer
Form 4 Transfer to a non-licensee Every retail NFA sale — the form your customers wait on
Form 1 Application to make an NFA firearm Customer questions; SBR builds
Form 2 Notice of firearms manufactured/imported 07/SOT-2 operations
Form 5 Tax-exempt transfer (e.g., to heirs, government) Estates and LE sales
Form 9 Export application Rare for retail dealers

The dealer workflow

Inbound: Form 3

Distributor files the eForm 3 to your FFL/SOT; you verify your license details, receive, and log the item into your NFA bound book on approval. Electronic Form 3s commonly clear in days.

Outbound: Form 4

Customer selects the item; you file the eForm 4 with the buyer’s responsible-person details, fingerprints (EFT upload), photo, and CLEO copies. The item stays in your book until approval, then transfers with your normal 4473 process on pickup.

The $0 tax stamp era

Since January 1, 2026, the transfer and making tax is $0 for suppressors and short-barreled rifles/shotguns (machine guns and destructive devices still carry the $200 stamp). Filing requirements did not change — only the tax. Volume is up accordingly; see surviving the $0 stamp rush.

eForms FAQ for dealers

How long do eForm 4 approvals take?

Electronic filings run far faster than paper and timelines keep improving — check current NFA Branch processing times, and keep customers informed as status changes rather than quoting a fixed number.

Do customers file their own Form 4?

No — the transferor (you) files. Your efficiency in collecting responsible-person packets is the biggest controllable factor in wait time.

What records do I keep?

Approved forms live with your NFA bound book records. NFA-BRO keeps every item’s form stage, dates, and history inspection-ready.
