SOT Renewal: Form 5630.7, the July 1 Deadline & What If You Missed It

Every SOT in America renews on the same clock: the federal special-tax year runs July 1 through June 30, and ATF Form 5630.7 with payment is due on or before July 1. If you’re reading this in early July wondering whether yours went in — this one’s for you.

How SOT renewal works

Your Special Occupational Taxpayer status isn’t a license — it’s an annual tax registration stacked on top of your FFL. Renewal means filing ATF Form 5630.7 (Special Tax Registration and Return) and paying the special occupational tax for your class. It doesn’t prorate: whether you register in July or the following March, the registration expires June 30.

The classes, quickly: Class 1 importers, Class 2 manufacturers, Class 3 dealers — the common one for gun shops handling suppressors, SBRs, and other Title II items alongside a Type 01 or 07 FFL.

What a lapsed SOT actually means

If July 1 passed and your 5630.7 didn’t, you are not registered for the new tax year — which means no NFA dealing until it’s fixed: no new Form 3s in from distributors, no Form 4 transfers out. Items already in your NFA inventory don’t become contraband, but your ability to do Title II business is paused. The fix is unglamorous: file the 5630.7 and payment now. There’s no special penalty process for being a week late — but there’s also no legal cover for NFA transactions conducted in the gap, so stop Title II activity until the registration is current. When in doubt, call the ATF NFA Division and your firearms attorney.

Why dealers miss it

Because nothing in a paper-and-spreadsheet shop screams “it’s June.” The renewal isn’t tied to your FFL expiration (which is its own 3-year clock), it lands mid-summer during gun-show season, and the notice is easy to lose. Dealers running NFA software keep SOT status on the same screen as the Form 4 pipeline — the July 1 cycle is visible all year instead of arriving as a surprise.

The checklist

  • Confirm this year’s 5630.7 is filed and payment cleared — keep the stamped copy with your FFL.
  • Calendar next year’s renewal for June 1, not July 1 — give yourself the buffer.
  • Verify your class still matches your business (dealer vs. manufacturer matters).
  • If you lapsed: pause Title II transactions, file now, document the gap.

NFA-BRO keeps SOT compliance, the Form 1/4 workflow, and your full NFA registry in one place — $99/month standalone. See the whole picture at NFA software for FFL dealers or request a demo.
